Unknown flower

Evening Primrose flowers are large, yellow and stunning. Having seen them around here growing wild in hedgerows I have wanted to get some growing in the garden. But it was not until last autumn that I was in a position to collect some seeds which I carefully put away in an envelope. Come spring I sowed them in a tray in my 'greenhouse' and surprisingly they all came up! I transplanted them into a couple of troughs and have been tending them on my terrace all summer. As there was no sign of flowers I looked them up - and of course they are bi-annual! So I just carried on watering them with the intention of planting them out in the autumn ready for next summer. However, suddenly, and from now where this flower appeared!
Isn't it stunning? Definitely not Evening Primrose and nothing like anything else we have in the garden so I have no idea where it has come from. However, I shall just enjoy, and collect the seeds for next year!

Autumn Ladies Tresses

The Autumn Ladies Tresses are members of the orchid family, flowering in our garden in September. We have dozens of these delicate flowers, averaging 6" tall, around the garden. Their latin name Spiranthes spiralis reflects the way the tiny flowers spiral around the stem.

Rainbow Log Cabin - finished!

I am really pleased with the way that my quilting has emphasised the curves made by my lop-sided log cabin blocks. I had been disappointed that this did not show up originally.
As this is a present to myself, I experimented with using a fleece as the backing to make it extra snuggly. I experimented first on a journal quilt with some free quilting and found it quite hard work to move around - the fleece did not seem to slide around as well as I expected. However with the walking foot on and straight stitching it worked like a dream.

All Geese Safely Gathered In!

At last all the geese are in place - and it really has not taken me very long to do. I have loved putting this together especially working out the design from a photograph and choosing the fabrics. I am very pleased with the fabrics I chose and with the overall effect. I shall have a couple of weeks on other projects and then start on the quilting!

Tree Frog and the 'canicule'

The tree frog is on the grille outside my window again today. We have not seen much of him/her this summer, probably as it was not warm enough early on.

We had three, on and off, outside the window last year - here is one taking a bath in the bowl of water I put out for them. I expect that the cold winter is the reason for the lower numbers.

Not quality pictures I am afraid as they were taken through the window.

We have had 10 days of temperatures over 30, with 38 over the weekend. Nice at first not to feel guilty about sewing instead of weeding but having to keep the doors closed to keep out the heat is not fun. And it is so dusty.

I have completed another DJ block, have several cut out and ready to sew in the evenings and have started putting a few together with their sashing. I need to work the sashing as I go along so that the colours blend in with my blocks.

Geese are still landing and hopefully the top will be finished by the end of the week.
